Elevating Vision with EDOF IOL at Eye Center of New York

Discover how this cutting-edge technology transforms not only cataract surgery but also the way you see the world around you.

What are Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) Intraocular Lenses (IOL)?

EDOF IOLs are IOLs that provide an extended range of glasses-free vision, compared to a monfocal IOL.  These groundbreaking IOLs are designed to address not only cataracts but also presbyopia, a common age-related condition affecting near vision. Presbyopia leads to a gradual loss of the eye’s ability to focus on close objects, requiring the use of reading glasses. EDOF IOLs provide an extended range of clear vision, reducing dependence on glasses for various distances.

There are three zones of vision we’d like to have clear vision postoperatively: Distance, Intermediate, and Near.   Monofocal IOLs only treat one of the three, while EDOF’s provide clear vision in two of the three zones - typically distance and intermediate.  While glasses are still needed for fine print, it is usually a low prescription such as a +1.25 reader available over the counter.

What are the Brands of EDOFs?

The most commonly used EDOF’s in the US are the Johnson & Johnson TECNIS SymfonyTM OptiBlue and the Alcon Clareon VivityⓇ IOL.

They both can achieve reduced spectacle dependence for distance and intermediate. So most patients can drive, watch TV, use the computer, or lap e-reader without glasses.  These are also great for golf and tennis players, musicians, opera and museum goers - where clear distance and intermediate vision, with minimal side effects is important.

What are the Benefits of EDOF IOL?

We call EDOF IOLs, “lifestyle lenses” because having clear vision from arms length all the way through distance (without glasses) is very useful in activities around the house, sports, enjoying the arts, and just everyday seeing.

Seamless Transition:

Experience a smooth and gradual transition between different visual ranges, ensuring comfortable and natural vision.

Enhanced Near Vision:

EDOF IOLs not only improve distance vision but also excel in providing clearer intermediate vision, reducing the need for progressives and only requiring weak reading glasses for fine print.

Quality of Vision:

Enjoy high-quality vision at varying distances, enriching your overall visual experience.

Who is a Candidate for EDOF IOL?

EDOF IOLs are tailored for individuals seeking high quality vision with spectacle independence from intermediate to distance.  As a category, EDOF IOLS sit between monofocal IOLs and multifocal IOLs.

  • Desire Spectacle Freedom: EDOF IOLs provide clear vision in two of the three zones of vision - typically distance and intermediate. Monofocal IOLs only provide clear glasses-free vision in one zone.  Multifocal IOLS target clear vision in all 3 zones.
  • Imperfect Eyes: Not all eyes are candidates for multifocals due to other existing conditions of the retina or cornea, while EDOF IOLs can still be used in imperfect eyes.
  • Post LASIK Eyes: Millions of people have enjoyed decades of visual freedom following their LASIK (or PRK or SMILE) procedure [link to conditions].  When an eye that had LASIK needs cataract surgery, EDOF IOLs are a great option to maximize visual freedom, as full multifocals cannot always be used in post LASIK Eyes.
  • Fewer Nighttime Symptoms: Compared to multifocal IOLs,  EDOF IOLs typically have fewer nighttime glare and halo symptoms, while providing greater range of vision than monfocals.

During a personalized preoperative evaluation, Dr. Raviv will assess your unique needs and determine the suitability of EDOF IOLs.
